Who are we?

Let me tell you a short story about love, friendship, passion and taking on challenges.


Rocking the Salt was started by myself, Gary and three really good friends of mine (there is a fourth friend, he is the silent partner, but is someone that is always open to offering advice, disagreeing when ideas need disagreeing, but he is there and we consider him a part of the active team).

So how does five good friends come up with an idea to start a business called Rocking the Salt?




Let's start with the bits about us:

Gary
Founder & Owner of Rocking the Salt

I have been in the restaurant trade for the last twenty years, having started as a waiter and worked my way up to a General Manager position. I always have had a passion and a love for food - my scale will agree with me. I have a passion for challenges, I know that sounds weird, but I love the satisfying feeling of having solved challenges set in front of me.

In 2018, I decided I needed to leave the running of restaurants, as it was not giving me the lifestyle that I desired and I needed a new challenge, a new direction in my journey of life. I became a waiter again (yes, I still need to pay the bills), and I dabbled in a few ideas in the online world of writing and photography. I still write and I still take my photography seriously (all photos on this blog are by me), but my real passion was in food. I have used Himalayan Salt blocks before and took one with me to a friends braai (BBQ for the non-South Africans), and cooked a feast on the the salt block over the coals - it was a super hit. I started playing with cooking ideas on a salt block and doing some research into them - my passion and love for the blocks began to grow and I wanted to share this passion with more people.
 


Ashley
Financial guru

Ash and I met just over eight years ago, while working together as waiters at a popular local steak house. Ash has worked and studied hard for the best part of ten years in the Accounting industry and shares a passion for food too. He fell in love with the Salt blocks and has a keen passion to learn more about them on a daily basis.  Naturally, Ash takes charge of our financials and accounts.



 
Nicholas
Health fundi

Nic and I went to school together, so he and I have been friends for over twenty years. Nic is an athlete (trail runner and cyclist) and has great insight into the health aspect of food, which is greatly beneficial to what we cook and how we use the salt blocks.
 


Gareth
Sales

Gareth and I met just over two years ago and the friendship is growing. A strong people person and a great strength in sales, Gareth has a growing passion for the Salt blocks. 




The Name...

We created Rocking the Salt to share our passion for Himalayan Salt and the joy and unique style of cooking that the Salt blocks offer. Cooking on Salt blocks is certainly a conversation starter and a great way to WOW friends and family. 

The name popped up in conversation one day and we felt that it really showed who we are and what we wanted to do. 

Between the five of us, we compliment each other, each with our own strengths and weaknesses, where one has a weakness the others support with their strengths.

We do not always agree on everything, but we certainly agree on how incredibly great our product is and the possibilities it can offer.
