Heating your Salt Block
"Your New Favourite Tool in the Kitchen"
A couple of pointers from our team that will assist you on your Salt journey:
Braai / BBQ / Stove Hob or Gas Flame
Braai / BBQ / Stove Hob or Gas Flame
- Place the block onto a low heat and heat up gradually.
"Slow & Steady"
- Water Test - sprinkle a few drops of water on the block. If the block is hot enough, the water will sizzle and evaporate immediately.
- You are now ready to cook on the salt block.
- Have fun!
Please be careful and take care when using a heated Salt block. Once heated, a salt block will be extremely hot and will hold the heat for about 40 minutes once taken off the heat source.
Should you wish to lift or move the block, make sure to use heat resistant oven gloves or two dry dish cloths that have been folded at least twice.
DO NOT TRY AND PICK UP THE SALT BLOCK USING YOUR BARE HANDS
In the Oven
It is suggested that the block not be heated in an oven due to the element going on and off (to control the temperature). The constant heating and re-heating, can cause fissures in the block and this will cause the block to crack resulting in damage to the oven / oven glass.
Should you like to heat the Salt block in the oven, follow these steps carefully (be aware that the method will take time):
- Place your dry salt slab into a cold oven and turn the heat to 40 degrees Celsius. Once at temperature, allow to heat for approximately 15 minutes.
- Increase the temperature to 60 degrees Celsius and allow to heat for a further 15 minutes.
- Once temperature has been reached and block has heated through, increase the temperature to 90 degrees Celsius and allow to heat for a further 15 minutes.
- Raise the temperature to 120 degrees Celsius and allow to heat through for 15 minutes.
- When the oven has reached 120 degrees Celsius, raise the temperature to 180 degrees Celsius and allow to heat through for 20 minutes.
The block will be ready to cook with now.
Be aware that each time that you open the oven door, heat will be lost in the oven, but the block will remain extremely hot.
